Structured Literacy

Structured Literacy: An evidence-based approach to reading and writing

At Frankley School we follow a Structured Literacy approach for teaching ākonga (learners) to read and write.  Structured Literacy is an evidence-based approach that is grounded in the Science of Reading and our understanding about how all brains learn to read.

In our learning hubs, teachers are using systematic and explicit instruction that integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Included in our Structured Literacy teaching are both foundational skills (decoding, spelling, handwriting and letter formation) and higher-level literacy skills (reading comprehension, written expression).

We have a school wide spelling programme that is based on The Code by Liz Kane. We utilise assessments for placing learners at particular levels so that ākonga can learn spelling patterns that is evident through our assessment.
